Teacher/Parapro/Parent Workshops

The Northeast GYSTC provides a number of Teacher or Parent Workshops covering a variety of topics to suit your needs. Workshops may be scheduled and held at your school during planning periods, faculty meetings, on in-service days, and after school. Some of the workshops that are currently being offered include:

Professional Learning Unit Courses

The Northeast GYSTC is an approved agency for issuing PLUs through the Georgia Dept. of Education. PLU Courses offered cover a variety of topics, including integration of science and math with language arts, social studies, history, and art. Our PLU course schedule is advertised on this web site. Courses can be offered on-site at your school with a minimum of 10 participants.

Saturday Science Adventures

Teachers can earn one PLU credit through this unique opportunity by having a Saturday Science Adventure program in their school. Credit is earned through attending a workshop, then planning and implementing a Saturday Science Adventure.

Teacher Resource Center

The Northeast GYSTC center contains many science/math/technology resources available for checkout. These resources include books, videos, posters, equipment (rock/fossil/shell kits, liquid nitrogen dewar, FOSS Kits, games, Van de Graaff Generator, etc.).

Family Science and/or Math Night

The Family Science/Math Night is an exciting program offered by NEGYSTC for an evening of hands-on activities for parents and their children. A perfect idea for PTA meetings and family-involvement initiatives. Programs generally last for an hour and a half and consist of 10 to 15 hands-on stations set up around your school. The school provides at least 10 to 15 teachers to run the stations, and space to run the activities. Your school may choose to have an additional center for snacks and/or parent information.

Guest Speakers

Northeast GYSTC can arrange for guest presenters to visit your school. Each program is generally scheduled for up to 1 hour. An assembly of at least one grade level must be arranged for a presenter to visit your school. The cost, if any, includes a discount for NEGYSTC schools, please call for rates.

Ron Anglin, Quite-a-Catch Juggling (Grades K-8)

Through the art of juggling, Ron Anglin astounds and amazes his audience as he teaches principles of motion, and puts Newton’s Laws into action! He has also created performances around character education themes and reading. Call NEGYSTC for rates.

Monteen McCord, Hawk Talk (Grades 6-12)

Monteen Mc Cord is permitted and regulated by Georgia Dept. of Natural Resources and U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service to care for injured and orphaned birds of prey. She presents live bird shows on the birds’ characteristics and physical features, Birds in Stories, Owl Pellet Probe, The Environmental Role of Birds of Prey, and Anatomy and Physiology of Birds of Prey. NASA Aerospace Education Specialists (Grades K-12)

NASA speakers can present demonstrations on a variety of topics including flight, the adventures of astronauts in space, etc. A question-answer period follows the presentation and the audience is encouraged to consider a career in the sciences. Cost is free.

Power Town by Georgia Power (Grades K-8)

Power Town is an "electrifying" demonstration of how energy is provided to our homes and businesses. Important safety measures concerning electricity will also be shared. This presentation also explains and defines conductors, insulators, and power lines. Cost is free.

Les Sewall, Standardized Test Development (For teachers, administration)

Les Sewall is a certified science teacher who develops questions for standardized tests. He is available to do test-prep workshops with teachers and administrators to help them better understand how standardized test questions are written, and to use these same techniques in developing their own tests. Call NEGYSTC for rates.
