| Welcome to
the Adult Education Program. It is designed for adults who
have different needs, backgrounds, and skill levels. We provide
a full range of literacy services for adults who need to acquire
or improve basic reading, math, and/or written communication
skills in order to prepare them to enter and succeed in the
workplace or postsecondary educational programs.
The program is flexible with many levels of instruction to
accommodate the student’s needs. Services offered by
the department include assessing the student’s skills.
Instruction is available in basic skills, computer literacy,
GED preparation, EL/Civics, the English as a Second Language
program, and ASSET and Compass Test preparation. There is
no charge for books or materials used in adult education classes.
In addition, the program is responsible for administering
the GED Examination.

The Adult Education Department offers instruction at sites
in Franklin, Habersham, Rabun, Stephens, Towns, Union, and
White Counties. A learning center is located in each county.
In addition to instruction offered in the learning centers,
the department also offers instruction in other sites including
business and industry, churches, and correctional facilities.
Instruction is sponsored by the DTAE Office of Adult Literacy.
Classes are available at no charge to adults 18 years and
older. To register for classes, individuals 16 or 17 years
of age need to provide picture identification, birth certificate,
withdrawal form from the last school attended, and a parent’s
permission form and parent’s identification. Parents
must attend the initial registration session with students
under age 18. To register, individuals 18 and 19 years
of age need a high school withdrawal form and picture identification.
After registration, each student takes a placement test to
properly identify his or her functioning level. Advisement
and scheduling are based on the student’s test results.
